Reunion

Cousin counting

We had two groups of new cousins attending last year's reunion. So the obvious question is "what number cousin were they?"

There are several techniques, and they get different answers. So I decided to document this one.

Start with Daniel J Farrell b1825 and Ann Ward.

Daniel J Farrell (b1860), Andrew Farrell (b1871) and Anna Farrell (b ?) are siblings.

Patrick Caldwell married Anna Farrell. Their children, Daniel Caldwell along with his siblings (Edmund, Harold, Mary, Leo and John, are first cousins to my father (Andrew H b 1910) and his siblings (Veronica, Mercedes, Dan, Packy, Mary Jane, and Ruth Claire).

Daniel Caldwell (b1903) married Helen Fitzpatrick and had a daughter Helen Mary Caldwell. Helen is second cousin to all of my level of the family, including Tom, Dick and Harry, etc.

If Helen had a child, call her Mary, then Mary would be third cousin to my nieces and nephews such as Dan, Lydia, Chris, Lisa, Andy, etc.

If Mary had a child, say Laura, then Laura would be fourth cousin to Lisa's or Lydia's or Andy's children.

And obviously, if Laura had children, they would be fifth cousins to Lydia's grandkids.

For non-parallel levels, add "removed." So Laura's children are second cousins, three times removed to Tom, Dick and Harry, and are third cousins, two times removed to Dan, Lydia, Chris, or Andy.

Or Helen's Mary would be second cousin, once removed from Tom, Dick anad Harry's siblings.
