First, your Linux box's kernel has to have the proper drivers compiled in. This is bad news at first, as most folks are clueless about how to build a kernel, even tho it is not hard. The good news is that for popular distributions, Planet CCRMA solves your problem.

Planet CCRMA collection of rpms (RPM stands for RedHat Package Manager) that you can add to a computer running RedHat 7.3, 8.0, 9 or Fedora Core 1 to transform it into an audio workstation (http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/)

Even better news is that the Linux 2.5 kernels have the proper hooks included in the distribution, and all subsequent kernals, such as 2.6 will have it automatically. This will be great.
