Where did all the people go?

Once upon a time, there was an internet startup, CyberCash, that was going to revolutionize commerce. Some would even claim that CyberCash invented eCommerce as many folks know it.

Yet CyberCash is gone. Another dot.bomb.

The online credit card processing business that CyberCash invented is full of competition that has turned it into a commodity -- lowest price wins. The CyberCoin product was a complete failure in the market. As was the product of my last two years there: InstaBuy/AgileWallet -- who needs one click buying?

Sigh.

What happened?

We could blame the usual culprits. Actually, Scott Adam's Dilbert does a better job identifying them, CyberCash has all of them. Plus a few, like the Bangalore engineering shop, that bring on "unique challenges." The most recent "fall guy" was Jim Condon. It was on his watch that nothing happened, so out he goes and someone else gets to play.

My favorite quote, attributed to "a high ranking finiancial official" was "They just ran it into the ground."

This sums it up, even if it was never said out loud. They had it all, and they blew it.

Twice dot.bomb'd

Some of the folk, including me, have now not only been part of one dot.bomb, CyberCash, but joined or started second generation dot.com companies only to have them become dot.bombs as well. Really cool companies that didn't make it include:

  • OneBigCD
  • Parabon
  • Longitude Systems (aka Ivyplan.com)
  • Conducent

I expect that some of the addresses, especially for parabon, ivyplan, and longsys.com are no longer correct.

Former CyberCashers

Know more folks? Know updated addressed? If so, please email me. And if you are listed and do not want to be, or want some info restricted, also please email me.

Because of all the SPAM, I've changed these entries to no longer have an automated (mailto:) link, and replaced the @ in the email address with the word "at". So if you want to use the address, you will now have to cut and paste it into your mailer. And, of course, replace " at " with @.
